Show Racism the Red Card

We were delighted to welcome the team from Show Racism the Red Card today.
Despite the very serious content and the messages given, the workshops led by Richard and Cat were filled with fun and laughter and the time flew by.  Pupils were also put through their paces by ex-Sunderland player, Gary Bennett, who ran Fun Fitness sessions with each class.
The workshops with each class looked at the definition of racism and the effect it can have on people. We found out that any negative comments about a person's skin colour, nationality, religion or culture would be considered racist.  Pupils also had discussions on racist words used to describe people and why they are offensive. The workshops showed us that rumours and negative comments can easily build up a negative view of people and that sometimes people need to learn how not to become racist. Richard explained that no one is born a racist - it is something that people learn. If you can learn to hate then you can just as easily learn not to hate.
Show Racism the Red Card works with schools around the North East and we look forward to meeting the team again at the Duchess' High School.
