Rota Kids

We set up the Aln Federation Rota Kids in 2012 and it has turned out to be a huge success in our local and worldwide community. We consist of a group of elected pupils from The Duke’s Middle, Lindisfarne Middle, St. Michael's First School  and Swansfield Park First School. Our aim is to support The Rotary Club and help to raise funds for people in our worldwide and local community. We meet every month to discuss ideas.

Previously we have held events to raise money to buy Shelter Boxes for people experiencing the after effects of natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes or tsunamis. We also held events to but water filters to provide clean drinking water for families in Africa. Every year we help to sell the Rotary Crocus broach which raises money to combat polio.

In 2013 we were very proud to be awarded a Civic Award from the Mayor of Alnwick in recognition of our fund raising efforts.

During the last 2 years,  we have raised money to help rebuild a school in Mapalagama in Sri Lanka and helped to build a toilet for the new nursery school there. The school was destroyed by the tsunami and The Rotary Club helped to rebuild it. To begin the campaign, we gave up a day in December to bag pack at Sainsbury’s. We raised just over £785 and received a thank you letter from the President of the Rotary Club of Columbo. In the summer terms, we organised a sponsored Fun Run to boost the funds further and raised nearly £2000.

Each year we hold the Enterprise Challenge. The Rotary Club give us £20 to develop a project to raise money for our own school funds. They agree to pledge a similar amount raised to provide equipment for the school in Mapalagama.

This year we are going to:

Present our work at the District Conference in Edinburgh
Organise events to raise money for the artificial limb centre in Kandy, Sri Lanka.
Collect soft toys and old glasses for local projects.Hold another Enterprise Challenge to raise money for school projects.

We will update you with our progress in termly newsletters and on the website.
